The Olympic final for the women’s snowboarding slopestyle has been called off and pushed back a day to Wednesday due to a heavy snowstorm in Livigno
At least a dozen people have died in the Italian Alps in a single week, more than any other one-week period on record.
Livigno, a picturesque ski village in the Italian Alps, is one of six cities hosting events for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
The Games in northern Italy, which start on Friday, will be spread across 8,500 square miles. Long distances, narrow roads, complex connections and snowfall will make it a logistical nightmare.
Call it homefield advantage, call it national pride. Italy's athletes are shining in the Winter Olympics underway in Milan and the Alps.
The Italian media are calling it a hecatombe-- massacre. At least 83 people have died in the Italian Alps between June 21 and July 23, and five others are missing. That averages out to almost three deaths a day. This week added two more victims to the list.
Snowfall triggered a postponement of activities Tuesday at the 2026 Winter Olympics, including snowboarding and skiing events in Livigno, Italy.
